Feb 4: The Barossa Valley

The Barossa is one of Australia’s oldest wine growing regions, dating back to 1841. Founded by German Lutheran immigrants escaping persecution by the Catholics, many of the wineries remain in the hands of the orginal families.

Based on Tripadvisor reviews, we hired Steve from Cellar Door Tours to take us around.  He would introduce us to the more interesting wineries and keep us under the Aussie legal limit of 0.05% blood alcohol.

What a wonderful day.  First an hour with Millie at Murray Street Vineyards, founded in 2001 by Andrew Seppelt, the 6th generation descendant of one of the original wine families.

Then down the dirt tracks to Greenock Springs for a personalized visit with the wimemaker’s son Jarrod.

Then over to Café Y for a wonderful lunch (pork belly and salad).

After lunch we visited two icons: Rockford and Charles Melton. You may know Charles Melton by his famous “Nine Popes” blend of Grenache, shiraz, and mataro (mouvedre)…a wonder “GSM” Rhone style wine.

Then to an overlook of the valley and back to the caravan park for a quiet evening and dinner.
