Feb 20: Hobart to the Freycinet Peninsula

After a leisurely morning we bid adieu to Pip and headed off for Orford, on our way to the Freycinet Peninsula .

We stopped at Orford to have lunch with Syd and Gail. Syd is Pip’s brother (Annabel’s uncle). They are a lovely couple and were sharing their second home on the beach with us.   They drove us to see Maria Island.

From here we drove to the Peninsula, found camping at Cole’s Bay, and hiked up and over the saddle and down to Wineglass Bay beach.

That's a kookaburra watching over us in the 4th photo above.

Quiet a trek, it is several hundred feet of vertical up rocks and stairs to the saddle, then down to the beach, and back up and over again.  We definitely had our cardio for the day!  But the views and the beach were spectacular, and the cool sand feet good on my feet!. Linda found a treasure chest of shells, many different that she had ever seen.

Back at the camp we prepared and ate the best meal of the trip: fresh local Tasmania blue mussels, fresh scallops (all from the local bay), pasta, and a bottle of unoaked Chardonnay from Freycinet Vineyards.  Local shellfish matched with local wine….tough to beat.
