and then on up to Freycinet Vineyards to taste
the rest of their production and were not disappointed. Then we were off to the ‘midlands’ in the
center of Tasmania and up to Joseph Chromy Vineyards in Relbia.

Chromy emigrated 65 years ago as a young man by slipped out
of communist eatern Europe. He makes
fantastic wines in a beautiful and tranquil setting. We lunched on a meat and
cheese platter along with beef, cheddar and jalapeno empanadas at picnic tables
in the shade while sipping pinot noir.
They often cover the vines here as the grapes start to ripen or else they lose the crop to the birds!
We went up to Launceston, Tassie’s second largest city,
where the city knows how to help folks cope with a warm Saturday
afternoon. Launceston’s crest incudes
the thylocene, the extinct Tasmanian Tiger.
Then off to the wine country of the eastern Tamar River
hills and valleys. We visited Piper
Brook and grabbed a dry gewürztraminer to go with our left over chicken curry,
and then onto Piper Creek, but it was closed for a wedding.
We ended the day at a very nice campground on the Bass
Strait, 1 km from the ferry terminal.
